Do you have Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums, usually caused by a bacterial infection.
If left untreated, it can become a more serious infection known as periodontitis. Gingivitis and periodontitis are major causes of tooth loss in adults, according to the American Dental Association.

So how do you know if you have gingivitis? Usual signs and symptoms include:

Gums are bright red or purple.
Gums are tender and sometimes painful to the touch.
Bad breath (also called halitosis).
Inflamed or swollen gums.

What Causes Gingivitis?
The main cause of gingivitis is Dental Plaque. Plaque is a biofilm that continually accumulates naturally on your teeth. In the early stage of gingivitis, bacteria in plaque build up, causing the gums to become inflamed and to easily bleed during brushing. Although the gums may be irritated, the teeth are still firmly planted in their sockets. No irreversible bone or other tissue damage has occurred at this stage.

Saliva is a natural way to clean the mouth. Gently massage the area under the ears, jaw and chin (salivary glands area) to stimulate saliva. Chewing, biting or talking also help to increase saliva flow.
