Do you have Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums, usually caused by a bacterial infection.
If left untreated, it can become a more serious infection known as periodontitis. Gingivitis and periodontitis are major causes of tooth loss in adults, according to the American Dental Association.

So how do you know if you have gingivitis? Usual signs and symptoms include:

  • Gums are bright red or purple.
  • Gums are tender and sometimes painful to the touch.
  • Bad breath (also called halitosis).
  • Inflamed or swollen gums.
  • Receding gums.
  • Soft gums.

What Causes Gingivitis?
The main cause of gingivitis is Dental Plaque. Plaque is a biofilm that continually accumulates naturally on your teeth. In the early stage of gingivitis, bacteria in plaque build up, causing the gums to become inflamed and to easily bleed during brushing. Although the gums may be irritated, the teeth are still firmly planted in their sockets. No irreversible bone or other tissue damage has occurred at this stage.

If you have gingivitis, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning at your dental office, or by self care at home by daily brushing and flossing, and by using toothpaste and mouthwash made with ingredients that reduce the swelling.

Here is our product recommendation for Gingivitis:
Our Tsuyahaku Antigingivitis Gel Toothpaste for Adults together with our Periowash 2-in-1 Toothpaste and Dental Rinse. The Periowash liquid toothpaste/mouthwash also deals with bleeding gums issue. It will stop bleeding gums and prevent further bleeding. It also tastes delicious!

In addition to this, remember it’s important to use a Soft toothbrush, preferably with ultrafine tapered bristles like this one here.

Finally, remember to brush gently and carefully, no need to be hard on your teeth and gums. You need them more than they need you👀😂😂

Japanese Star Festival ‘Tanabata’

Wishes for Tanabata

So since today is the 7th, we wanted to share one of Japan’s five traditional seasonal festivals,Tanabata, or the star festival, observed on July 7.⛩🌟
As the Tanabata’s date approaches, long, narrow strips(tanzaku) , vibrant ornaments, and other decorations are hung from bamboo branches, enlivening the decor of homes as well as brightening shopping arcades, train stations, and other public spaces. 🇯🇵😄

A young boy hanging his tanabata wishes on a bamboo branch

Before they are hung, tanzaku are inscribed with a wish, such as a child’s dream of becoming a famous soccer player or a parent’s hope for career success.✍️🙏
The expression of hopes and dreams is not limited to tanzaku. Traditional decorations and talismans include colorful streamers called fukinagashi that represent threads for those wanting to be better weavers and gossamer amikazari symbolizing wishes by fishermen for full nets. 🌬🐟

A Tanzaku with a child’s wishes of being a soccer player

There are also hanging kinchaku bags for prosperity and orizuru (folded cranes) for longevity. Items are easily constructed from origami and other light, colorful materials. In the past, ornament-laden bamboo branches were placed in rivers to be carried away by the current as a means of ensuring that wishes would be granted. 🙏 🙏 However, modern environmental consciousness has seen this tradition largely fall by the wayside.🌱🐾🌻

PS:Bamboo is thought to have become a part of the tanabata tradition for its propensity to grow straight and tall, with upward stretching branches bearing wishes to heaven on the wind. The plant was also believed to ward off insects and was displayed to protect rice crops and symbolize hopes of a bountiful harvest.🥳🤩

It’s also formulated with Calcim Phosphate and Fukuronori which play an important role in re-calcification and re-mineralizing the teeth’s lost minerals.

Japanese Culture: Teeth Shrine

Teeth Shrine in Osaka, Japan ⛩🇯🇵

It’s already the last weekend of Golden Week here in Japan. Golden Week (GW) is one of Japan longest public holiday. For you who planning to travel to Japan (or currently in Japan) and want to visit some unique places, here in Osaka we have a Shinto Shrine (temple) dedicated for teeth! 😮✨

Teeth Shrine itself is located in Umeda, Osaka, which is a very busy business and entertainment district in North Osaka. This small shrine mostly overlooked even by the locals. ⛩
The history behind this shrine is far away when Umeda was still a flood hazard area near the Yodogawa River. The locals then pray to a megalith to stop the flood. The megalith managed to stop(歯止め)the flood and so the Umeda area became safe ever since.👏🏻👏🏻

The megalith then become the Deity of Stoppage (歯止めの神様) but eventually it changes to Deity of Tooth Pain Relief (歯通止めの神様) and often visited by people with dental problem or dentist. 🦷☺️
※ The kanji ”歯” itself means “tooth”, but “歯止め” means “stop” and “歯痛止め” means “tooth pain reliever”

In the front of the shrine, there’s stored a small piece of the megalith and believed to be able to cure dental problem if a person with dental problem touch the stone. 😮❗️Moreover, there’s also a popular annual festival held on this shrine to pray for a year of healthy teeth. People bring their old toothbrush to be given to the deity and exchange it with a new toothbrush on the Toothbrush Award Ceremony. 😁✨

So that’s one of the trivia about Japan. Don’t forget to visit this unique shrine when you visit Osaka! 🤗🇯🇵

Japanese Culture: Reiwa(令和)

Reiwa, a new era of Japan!

Japan starts a new era, Reiwa, as of today, May 1st 2019, after Emperor Akihito was set to abdicate on April 30th 2019. Crown Prince Naruhito, the successor, will be the 126th emperor and the enthronement ceremony will be held on October 22nd 2019. 🗼🏯
This marks the end of Heisei era that lasted for 31 years started from January 8th 1989, one day after the death of Emperor Hirohito. 2019 Japan Golden Week also affected by this imperial transition with a special ten days consecutive holiday starts from April 27th to May 6th.😆🎊

Do you know about different types of electric toothbrushes?

April marked the beginning of a new era for Japan!✨
Sad to say goodbye to [Heisei]😔 but also exciting to have witnessed the beginning of [Reiwa]🤩

Speaking of different … Do you know know the difference between Electric, Sonic and Ultra-sonic toothbrushes?😅
Well, we’ll break it down to the basics;

【Electric Toothbrush】
Removes plaque with approximately 2500~7500 brush stokes per minute
The motor makes rapid automatic bristle motions which are powerful to thoroughly clean the mouth.
Example: Oral B Smart Professional, with 3 brushing modes.

【Sonic Toothbrush】
A sonic toothbrush is a type of electric toothbrush that uses over 30,000 sonic motions to remove plaque and clean teeth
Sonic brushes rely on a sweeping motion alone to clean the teeth, the movement that they provide is often high in amplitude which means they offer larger sweeping brush stroke motions.
Example: Linear Sonic Toothbrush PLUME, with 5 brushing modes and feather-soft bristles

【Ultra Sonic Toothbrush】
An ultrasonic toothbrush is one that uses a very high frequency of vibration (160~200万Hz) referred to as ultrasound to remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth.
Ultrasonic toothbrushes unlike sonic ones do not rely on a physical motion to clean the teeth.
Example: Sonicare Professional & Sonicare KIDS

Maybe not exactly exciting, but the difference might come in handy next time you’re getting something other than a manual toothbrush!😉😇

Choosing toothpaste for your kids

Choosing toothpaste for your kids 🦷👶🏻👦🏻👧🏻

After your kids learn to spit and rinse their mouth, it’s time to step up the game by adding toothpaste for a complete brushing habit. Different from adult, kids’ teeth are still in development thus it needs an extra attention to keep it healthy and strong. 🦷✨

With a vast choice in the market, finding the best toothpaste for our loved ones is not an easy task. The common oral problem in children is tooth cavity.😯❗️
It’s widely known that fluoride has the benefit for anti-cavity, so it’s recommended to use fluoride toothpaste. Take a note that to get the optimal benefit of fluoride, the concentration should be 1000ppmF for kids under 3 years and 1450ppmF for everyone else.⚠️

Choose the non-abrasive toothpaste also help to keep your kids teeth healthy. Do not forget to control the sugar intake and keep the brushing habit properly.🍭🍫
To make the brushing more enjoyable, find the flavor that suit with your kids’ taste. Toothpaste with character on the package can be one appealing point to encourage your kids for keeping the healthy habit.😁✨

Another point worth to note is the amount of the toothpaste. ⚠️
Kids younger than 3 years should using amount no more than a size of a rice grain and no more than a size of a pea for kids between 3-6 years. The excess amount of fluoride intake can lead to fluorosis (hypomineralization of tooth enamel).😨❗️

In the end, it’s the habit we want to create. So find the toothpaste that your kids happy with without putting aside the important ingredients that helps the teeth healthy.👨🏻‍👩🏻‍👧🏻‍👦🏻❤️
