Japanese Culture: Teeth Shrine

Teeth Shrine in Osaka, Japan ⛩🇯🇵

It’s already the last weekend of Golden Week here in Japan. Golden Week (GW) is one of Japan longest public holiday. For you who planning to travel to Japan (or currently in Japan) and want to visit some unique places, here in Osaka we have a Shinto Shrine (temple) dedicated for teeth! 😮✨

Teeth Shrine itself is located in Umeda, Osaka, which is a very busy business and entertainment district in North Osaka. This small shrine mostly overlooked even by the locals. ⛩
The history behind this shrine is far away when Umeda was still a flood hazard area near the Yodogawa River. The locals then pray to a megalith to stop the flood. The megalith managed to stop(歯止め)the flood and so the Umeda area became safe ever since.👏🏻👏🏻

The megalith then become the Deity of Stoppage (歯止めの神様) but eventually it changes to Deity of Tooth Pain Relief (歯通止めの神様) and often visited by people with dental problem or dentist. 🦷☺️
※ The kanji ”歯” itself means “tooth”, but “歯止め” means “stop” and “歯痛止め” means “tooth pain reliever”

In the front of the shrine, there’s stored a small piece of the megalith and believed to be able to cure dental problem if a person with dental problem touch the stone. 😮❗️Moreover, there’s also a popular annual festival held on this shrine to pray for a year of healthy teeth. People bring their old toothbrush to be given to the deity and exchange it with a new toothbrush on the Toothbrush Award Ceremony. 😁✨

So that’s one of the trivia about Japan. Don’t forget to visit this unique shrine when you visit Osaka! 🤗🇯🇵
